Incidental
detection of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has
increased significantly in recent years because of
widespread use of abdominal imaging including
ultrasonography. The patients with incidentally
diagnosed RCC have better survival, being at a lower
stage and grade than symptomatic tumors. Concerns
regarding development of chronic renal failure after
radical nephrectomy have resulted in an increasing
use of organ-sparing surgical techniques for
patients with small unilateral renal tumors in the
presence of a normal contralateral kidney. Most of
these cases are discovered incidental.
Key words:
incidental renal cell carcinoma, ultrasonography,
nephron-sparing surgery.
